OCEAN PLASTICS
(Lulia and Mads)
Ocean plastics are a disease infecting and harming the environment. In our preparations for our GSL trip, we learned about the extent to which ocean plastics are detrimental to the health of our oceans and understood our roles as conscious citizens. We began our journey with a riveting documentary that forced us to see the horrifying effect ocean plastics were having on animals. We explored numerous sources that detailed the impact of society’s actions on the natural world including National Geographic articles. An oceanographer from SEA Education, Kara Lavender Law, was kind enough to join our class for a period and explain the important work she and others have completed to further our understanding of the ecological role plastics play.
The next step in our educational journey is to implement these teachings on the island of Eleuthera. We will accomplish this by removing harmful plastics from beaches and nurturing the success of the natural ecosystem.
