Blog 3: Aidan and Noa
Field Guides for Fish: by Aidan and NoaIn preparation for our class trip to the Bahamas, one of the things we spent time on was a
“fish field guide.” We individually researched different fish that we are likely to encounter
while snorkeling. We looked at species like the french grunt, the fairy basslet, and the reef
shark, investigating their evolutionary traits, group behaviors, and their role in the ecosystem.
We compiled all of our research together to create a quick-hand field guide, in the hopes
of referencing it during our time in the field observing the aquatic biodiversity within the reef.
Imagine: one of us spies a mysterious fish while snorkeling. We pop up out of the water
and into the boat and immediately head for the field guide, which contains information
written by our classmates about the fish we just saw! This practice in connecting our
experiential learning with our classroom knowledge will help us be successful long after
we leave the Bahamas and graduate Lakeside. #fishfieldguide
